Tongyeong is a coastal city in South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea. It consists of Goseong Peninsula, Hansan Island, Mireuk Island and other islets.It was formerly known as Chungmu, after the posthumous name of Admiral Yi Sun-sin. The name Tongyeong means "command post" and is itself associated with Admiral Yi, as it refers to his principal base that was located on nearby Hansan Island.

Yi Sun-shin (Hangul: 이순신; hanja: 李舜臣; April 28, 1545 – December 16, 1598) was a Korean naval commander, famed for his victories against the Japanese navy during the Imjin war in the Joseon Dynasty, and is well-respected for his exemplary conduct on and off the battlefield not only by Koreans, but by Japanese Admirals as well.[1] Military historians have placed General Yi Sun-Shin on par with Admiral Horatio Nelson as arguably the greatest naval commander in history for his undefeated record against seemingly insurmountable odds despite no background in naval training.[2] His title of Samdo Sugun Tongjesa (삼도 수군 통제사 ; 三道水軍統制使), literally meaning "Naval Commander of the Three Provinces," was the title for the commander of the Korean navy until 1896.
One of Yi's greatest accomplishments was resurrecting and improving the turtle ship (거북선; 龜船). With his creative mind and the support of his subordinates, Yi was able to devise the geobukseon, or Turtle Ship. Contrary to popular belief, the turtle ship was not actually invented by Admiral Yi; rather, he improved upon an older design that had been suggested during the reign of King Taejong.

Hallyeosudo viewing Ropeway, installed on Mt. Mireuk in Tongyeong is the only dual-cable automatic circulating gondola system in Korea. It was built using the latest Swiss technology. It is 1975m long, the longest tourist Ropeway in Korea. Despite its length, it is built in an eco-friendly design using a single pole, which not only protects the environment but also provides a very comfortable ride for passengers. It has 48 8-seat gondolas to transport passengers continuously, so riders can board instantly and enjoy beautiful Hallyeosudo scenery in private cars with family and friends.
