Like the title characters of the world-renowned William Shakespeare play “Romeo and Juliet,” there is a famed couple in Korea who shared an ardent love for one another: Chunhyang and Lee Mongnyong. The classical Korean literary work Chunhyangjeon tells one of the most noble and pure love stories through the protagonists Chunhyang and Lee Mongnyong. While Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” has a tragic ending culminating in the death of the two main characters, Chunhyangjeon has a happy ending where the two lovers are dramatically reunited after a series of hardships.
Namwon in Jeollabuk-do is the hometown of the story Chunghyanjeon. Gwanghallu Pavilion is where love first blossomed between Chunhyang and Lee Mongnyong and Chunhyang Theme Park was specifically created for the celebrated love story. Visitors to Namwon can also enjoy a wide range of traditional cultural performances such as “Singwansatto Buimhaengcha” (procession of the newly-appointed governor), which humorously depicts the despotism exercised by the tyrannical governor Byeon Hakdo from the story Chunhyangjeon, outdoor concerts at Gwanghalluwon Garden, and regular folk performances at Chunhyang Theme Park.
